Osteoarthritis (OA) is a very commonest type of arthritis generally found in older age group. It is known as Sandhi vata in Ayurveda. It is a joint disorder caused by the erosion/ breaking of cartilage ( cushion bones at joints) causing pain, swelling and stiffness as bones rub together. The joints most commonly affected are the knees, hips, hands and spine. Most common area is low back and knee joint.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is most common cause for osteoarthritis.
Osteoporosis is loss of bone mass that occurs throughout the skeleton, predisposing patients to fractures. Osteoporosis is characterized by a low bone mass and a micro architectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. In 1994, a WHO expert panel found this concept by defining diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis on the basis of measurement of bone mineral density and relating it to the mean bone mineral density of young adult. Clinically, osteoporosis is recognized by the occurrence of characteristic fractures after low-energy trauma, the best documented of these being fractures of the hip, vertebrae, and distal forearm.
Causative factors
Low calcium intake, Sedentary lifestyle, Smoking, Excessive alcohol or caffeine intake, High protein and phosphate intake, Early menopause, Advanced age, Long term steroid intake.
In today's hectic lifestyle hardly we found a person who is not suffering with any kind of joint disorders. After some age bones become soften, they reduce their hardness due to various causes, like lack of vit D, calcium, lack of sun exposure, post-delivery etc. Soften bones will become prone to fracture, dislocation or disorders like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis etc. Most common symptom is pain.
