Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. Diabetes is a condition that results from lack of the hormone insulin in a person's blood, or when the body has a problem using the insulin it produces. The hormone insulin moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored or used for energy. With diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't effectively use the insulin it does make.
Untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs.
Types of diabetes
- Type 1 diabetes
It is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas, where insulin is made. The causes behind this attack are unknown. About 10 percent of people suffer with this type of diabetes.
- Type 2 diabetes
It occurs when your body becomes resistant to insulin, and sugar builds up in your blood. The person makes insulin, but either the insulin does not work in that person's body as it should, or they do not make enough insulin to process the glucose. When insulin does not work as it should, glucose (sugar) in the blood cannot get into the parts of the body that need sugar.
This is the most common type of diabetes, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and it has strong links with obesity.
- Pre-diabetes
It occurs when your blood sugar is higher than normal, but it's not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
- Gestational diabetes
It is high blood sugar during pregnancy. Insulin-blocking hormones produced by the placenta cause this type of diabetes.
Cause
- Type 1 diabetes
It is said to be unknown origin, exactly what causes type 1diabetes is not cleared. For some reason, the immune system falsely attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Genes may play a role in some people. It’s also possible that a virus sets off the immune system attack.
